Gunung
Mulu National Park, Sarawak, Borneo, Malaysia
It has
been frequently noted that Mulu "defies description". What
follows is not an attempt to describe
Mulu but rather an attempt to entice and prepare you, the potential
visitor, for the adventure that
awaits within Sarawak's largest National Park.
The trail takes its name from
its historical role as the route taken by warring parties between the Tutoh and
Medalam rivers. The trail runs between the park and Limbang, a picturesque town
on the Limbang River, north of the park. Trekkers can start from either end, but
if taking the route from park HQ all arrangements must be made before leaving
for Camp 5.
From Camp 5 the trail to Kuala
Terikan is 11.3km long, a 4-5 hours walk through a very isolated area of Borneo.
There is a chance you will see more wildlife along this trail such as giant
porcupine, wild boar or macaques.
A longboat will meet you at
Kuala Terikan and take you downstream to a local longhouse for an over-night
stay. Depending on river levels the long boat trip is 2-5 hours but expect to
push the boat at least a few times. A 1 ½ hour boat ride next morning takes you
to Medamit to catch the van to Limbang.
